Location Description : Although ***** is the only City in Coos County with the largest population, this area of the Androscoggin Valley was one of the last to be settled in New Hampshire. Known as Maynesborough plantation, this large tract of land was awarded to Sir William Mayne and Bartholomew, Robert, Thomas and Edward Mayne of Barbados and London, England by King George II, through his Governor John Wentworth in 1771. Wentworth was appointed by King George II to help settle new towns providing the King with additional taxes. Land grants were typically 6 square miles, given to wealthy supporters of the King. Called proprietors, they sold portions of their township to farmers who cleared and settled the land. The terms of the charter included establishing a certain number of settlers and roads over a ten year period. However, the Mayne family never claimed their grant and the charter disappeared with the American Revolution.
